INSTRUMENTATION FOR PROCESS MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL IN THE BIOPROCESS INDUSTRY

This review covers the current state of biosensor technology relative to the requirements of the bioprocess industry and discusses the present needs for both sensor technology and the development of control methodologies that will accommodate such sensors. Particular emphasis is placed upon the development of robust chemical sensors that use thermophilic or otherwise ultrastable biological materials or that make use of non-biological analogues of such materials. In addition, the paper examines the potential for inherently more robust optical (e. g. fiber optic) and other sensor types that may avoid the need to use less stable materials.
