摘要
The main characteristics (bandwidth, electrical drive power, frequency response) are considered of traveling-wave integrated-optical modulators utilizing waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometers. It is pointed out that the bandwidth of several dozen gigahertz at the drive power in the order of hundred milliwatts can be achieved only with devices in which the intermittent accumulating interaction between modulating SHF and optical waves is realized. Different approaches to the implementation of these devices are discussed which employ periodic reversive electrodes, a curved optical waveguide for its periodic withdrawal from the region of interaction between the light and the modulating wave, structures with aperiodic reversals of the electric field polarity including <<toothed>> structures.
