Optical fibers have been obtained from the Te-Se-Br and Te-Se-I systems. Fibers having a composition of Te3Se4I3 show an attenuation less than 2 dB/m at several wavelengths. Preforms having a core-cladding structure have also been drawn into fibers and these fibers show higher attenuation than the single index fibers. Introduction of As into the so-called TeX glasses greatly improves the thermal Properties (T(g), expansion coefficient, etc.). The first fibers from these glasses have an attenuation of about 5 dB/m between 8 and 12 mum.
