Towards realization of an advanced information society in the 21st century, the construction of broadband network which can provide speed-free, medium-free, and connection-free communications is expected. ATM is expected to provide flexible communications as the key technology for the broadband network. It is also expected to contribute to constructing a simple network without hierarchy. Moreover, ATM network has a capability of realizing various multimedia services. This may dramatically change quantity and quality of telecommunications. This paper describes the technologies needed for the broadband network, the service features that should be achievable by combinations of these technologies, a migration scenario from the current network to the broadband network, examples of practical systems, and key issues in promoting broadband network construction.
