A prototype unit consisting of two organic scintillator detectors (NE102A and NE213) used to detect neutrons up to 400 MeV is described. Each element has a volume of 100 X 10 X 10 cm3 with the major side transverse to the incident neutron beam. The detectors were calibrated in the energy range 54-360 MeV with neutrons from the np --> np reaction. The measured detection efficiencies (4-10%) are compared with the predictions of a Monte Carlo code for three neutron detection thresholds: 2, 6 and 16 MeVee. The timing performances of the neutron unit are: 740 and 850 ps for the NE102A and NE213, respectively.
