Experience of constructing and operating the revetments of the earth slopes of structures at this hydroelectric power station have indicated high labour intensity, lengthy construction period, and poor maintainability. On the basis of this experience, new more cost-effective designs have been developed. These make use of local natural unsorted sand-gravel mixtures. No building codes or standards exist for the use of these materials in hydrotechnical construction and experimental laboratory studies are now required to provide the necessary standards for the in use in hydraulic structures. There is also a need to undertake further resource assessment.
