Investigation of Fe+3 and Fe+2 properties in calcium aluminoborate glasses

Ferric and ferrous ions were investigated by employing 57Fe Mössbauer, Raman spectroscopy, and EPR to xCaO:(80-x)B2O3:20Al2O3+yFe2O3 glasses providing information about their relative concentrations and local structural properties of the glass matrix as a function of the CaO concentration. The concentration of [Fe+3] increases almost linearly in the analyzed composition range. The quadrupole splitting and isomer shift values for Fe+2 and Fe+3 ions show a dependence on x. The results are discussed with regard to the changes of the relative concentrations of BO3 and BO4 groups and of non-bridging oxygens (NBOs), as inferred by the spectral analysis.
