A multicriteria approach for trade-off analysis between economic and environmental objectives in rural planning

In this paper a multicriteria methodology is presented for the trade-off analysis between economic and environmental objectives in rural planning. First the discrete version of the methodology is explained and illustrated for a road planning problem. To make the method operational for larger problems, a mixed integer programming formulation of the methodology has been developed. With this formulation also other types of problems can be analyzed such as land use planning problems as is illustrated with a small example.
