MRP in developing countries: A case of Nigerian manufacturing firms

This paper presents the results of a sample survey on the use of material requirements planning (MRP) in Nigerian manufacturing firms. Contrary to popular belief, the use of MRP by manufacturing companies in Nigeria is fairly common. Furthermore, about 60 percent of the companies surveyed used computerized MRP. This could be attributed to the participation of foreign partners who continue to transfer effective managerial and technical know-how to the Nigerian manufacturing sector. Among the benefits derived from the use of MRP are improved productivity, better operating schedule, and reduced inventory cost.
