Measurements of surface temperature and heat transfer using a fluorescence imaging system based on thermographic phosphors

This paper describes a novel approach based on the temperature-sensitive florescence of a thermographic phosphor (TGP) that enables the measurements of local convective heat transfer. The measurement system is capable of acquiring a series of transient. full-field surface temperature images during a heating process. Using data reduction procedures designed specially for the requirement of each experiment, these temporally resolved temperature maps yield the consistency local heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficient can be determined by either a transient surface: temperature monitoring technique or an innovatively designed optical heat flux gauge. Tno benchmark tests. a local impingement jet and a separated flow over a backward-facing step, are used to demonstrate the feasibility of this system. The measurement results exhibit superior spatial resolution with detailed features in good agreement with those using other conventional thermal methods.
