摘要
Gas Nitriding is used to improve the surface properties like hardness, wear resistance and life span. CP (Commercial Pure) Ti Grade-2 Titanium is the pure form of titanium which possesses good weldability, strength, ductility and formability; hence it is widely used in medical industry, airframe skin, exhaust pipe shrouds etc. The drawback in CP Grade-2 titanium is not as strong as any other titanium alloys. Ti6Al4V Grade-5 Titanium alloy is highly resistant to high temperature and is corrosion resistant. It also possesses excellent mechanical properties and good machinability; hence it is widely used in aerospace, automotive and marine industries. The drawback of Grade-5 Ti6Al4V is, it has poor shear strength and is corrosive to strong acids. The common drawback of both these titanium grades are galling which is a type of wear caused which is caused due to adhesion between two sliding surfaces due to which the hardness, wear resistance and lifetime of the material gets affected. To overcome the problem of galling in titanium, gas nitriding techniques is carried out. In this research, the Vickers hardness, Microstructural investigation a, FESEM and EDAX testing are carried out to investigate the mechanical and metallurgical properties of Gas nitrided Commercially Pure CP Grade - 2 titanium and Ti6Al4V Grade - 5 titanium alloy.
