AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF COMMUTATION CHARACTERISTICS OF SMALL-SIZED TRIGGERED VACUUM SWITCHES

摘要
The paper presents results of a study of commutation characteristics and triggering stability of small-sized vacuum switches with discharge gaps of about 1 mm. The experiments were carried out in microsecond range of pulse durations with current amplitudes from 50 A to 5 kA, and current rise rates of 10(9) ... 10(10) A/s. The upper limit of the commutated voltage range was limited by self-breakdown of the switches at level of 8 kV. The results indicate the most stable and fastest turning-on of the switches is achieved at the cathode triggering mode with positive control pulses. Leakage resistance as an indicator of triggering gap state enables us to estimate its breakdown voltage.
