Non-agricultural employment and poverty in rural India - A review of evidence

Overall the beginning of a structural change in employment in the Indian economy is visible. A slow transfer of labour away from agriculture and toward the non-agricultural sector has also been noted. This article discusses the various issues related to the growth of the non-agricultural sector, the causes and consequences of such a development and its impact on poverty. This is attempted through a detailed review of the recent Indian literature over the last decade, on the growth of non-agricultural employment and possible reasons.
