The two wild-man episodes that appear in Malory's Morte d'Arthur follow the traditional pattern of the medieval nobleman-turned-wild man episode type and serve as Bakhtinian carnival. The wild-man transformation is not permanent, however, and the knights' reintegration into chivalric society demonstrates the failure of carnival to resolve true conflict. (LC)
