This paper presents a general approach to the role of wine in ancient Greek society. For that, it studies the beginning of viticulture, the role of wine, and the most relevant types of wines from its beginnings to the Classic period from the most important sources: classical texts, iconography, and the results of the analysis of the preserved biological remains. The consumption of wine in Greece was the means for the expression of the customs and values that represented the concept of civilization in Greece that, with the set of guidelines or the presence of specific tableware, becomes the most suitable setting for fun, philosophical reflection or even political conspiracy.
