IRS makes important changes to its voluntary disclosure policy

As IRS struggles with insufficient funding and staffing levels, it is trying to make things easier for taxpayers who have "strayed" to return to compliance. Changes to the voluntary disclosure policy and new initiatives to encourage taxpayers may go a long way toward achieving that goal, but even with less subjectivity and more certainty in the policy, practitioners must tread carefully on behalf of their clients.
