Important controls of PGE enrichment in Proterozoic metal-rich black shales

Proterozoic marine metal-rich black shales from the Czech Republic, Finland and Russia are found in geotectonic and geological settings having some features in common. The highest contents of platinum group elements (PGE) were found in metal-rich black shales bearing stratiform PGE-Au mineralization of the Timsk type (Russia). Correlation studies have shown that the intensity and geochemical composition of (volcanogenic) hydrothermal fluids, size and type of anoxic basin, intensity of bacterial activity and the degree of metamorphism were major controls of metal enrichment.
