2-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,3-dioxolane at 150 K

The title compound, C9H9NO4, is an intermediate in the synthesis of polyvinylaminobenzaldehyde azo dyes. The dioxolane ring displays an envelope conformation with the tertiary C atom deviating from the plane of the remaining four atoms. The nitro group is only slightly twisted out of the plane of the phenyl ring. The intermolecular packing is stabilized by two C-H ... O hydrogen bonds and two close N ... O contacts. The X-ray structure analysis was undertaken to ascertain the nature and conformation of a reaction product.
