To date, man-made entities are not fully functional when it comes to communicating. My aim is to study some of the pragmatic interactive aspects of agents in a society which includes Artificial Life creatures. Preliminary indications show that bringing about positive change for future human-machine encounters entails rebutting agentism (concept not to be taken in its political sense here). The benefits of re-establishing a "proper" relational stance in the Artificial Life field are twofold, namely, a./to better understand the difficulties encountered, and b./to bring enhanced meaning to the goals of building animate artefacts. Point a has consequences for b in that it will change the very goals of scientists working in Artificial Life. In its present state, the notion of agent proves unsuitable for the specification of any higher-order communication tasks A-Life creatures are to handle. Establishing reasons for bringing back detailed descriptions for agents in future is the ultimate goal in this article.
