Monoclonal antibodies to the nucleoprotein and glycoprotein of infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) were prepared. Hybridomas were selected by ELISA according to the production of murine immunoglobulins. The specificity of the monoclonal antibodies was tested by Western blotting after SIDS-PAGE. The monoclonal antibodies reacted only with a panel of nine IHNV isolates differing in electropherotype and geographical origin. No cross-reactivity with strains of the related viral haernorrhagic septicaemia virus was observed. Larger amounts of the monoclonal antibodies were raised in vivo and used for the preparation of direct peroxidase-labelled conjugates for the demonstration of IHNV in infected cell cultures.
