We demonstrate the room temperature tribophosphorescence from a simple anthracene boronic ester, 9-(pinacolboryl)anthracene (1). Both 1 and 9,10- bis(pinacolboryl)anthracene (2) show fluorescence and delayed emission at room temperature in the solid-state. Under mechanical stress, 1 displays tribophosphorescence. In contrast, 2 shows mechanofluorochromism under similar conditions. Detailed optical, computational, and crystal structural studies are carried out to rationalize the tribophosphorescence characteristics of 1.
