In hot forming die quenching (HFDQ) patched blanks are sometimes used to locally-enhance the crash performance of the as-formed part. Occasionally, however, the patched regions are not fully austenitized, resulting in soft ferrite in the formed part. This paper investigates the origins of incomplete austenitization of patched blanks, and evaluates several candidate remediation strategies. Detailed heat transfer models of single gage and patched blanks are derived and used to predict the occurrence of incomplete austenitization. Various strategies to optimize the heating process for patched blanks are proposed and evaluated, including the use of a high emissivity coating to compensate for the increased thermal mass of the patch.
