The stability of mine tailings dams under static conditions, which are subjected to high deposition rates is assessed, using a 2-dimensional stress-deformation analysis technique by the finite element method. The algorithm couples a non-linear, large-strain self-weight sedimentation model (for the slimes fraction), with a plain strain, classic soil consolidation model (for consolidated slimes and other soil-like materials), in anisotropic, time-dependent conditions. Stress levels, excess pore water pressures and safety levels can be predicted at any point in time both in the dam body and in the pond, during staged construction of the surface impoundment, for the end benefit of both the designer and the pond operator. The analytical and numerical formulations are presented here, together with a discussion on the parameters involved in a typical analysis.
