Multilayer coatings are becoming more common which usually consists of 3-5 layers that combine thermally resistant materials, like alumina, with tough or abrasion-resistant layers. Multilayering also improves adhesion and allows a wider range of substrate/coating combinations. The advantages of different coatings into an optimum sequence to handle specific application conditions can be combine during chemical vapor deposition coatings (CVD). CVD diamond coatings (CVDD) offers a cost effective alternative to polycrystalline diamond (PCD). In CVDD, thin films applied directly to a substrate, while thick film is grown, polished, and brazed to the substrate. CVDD-coated tools fall between those of conventional coated carbide tools and PCD.
