The parallel studies of liquid jet instability has long recognized the strong influence of the velocity profile of the emerging jet on its subsequent disintegration. A study carried out more recently showed that at large Weber number, both temporal and spatial analyses yield the same results with the disturbance growth rate and wave number differing only by a small amount that is inversely proportional to Weber number. The present study focuses mainly on temporal instability. In particular, examples are given which show that non-uniformity of the velocity profile affects the instability of liquid sheets.
