摘要
Considerable debate has been going on regarding the significance of the vertical component of earthquake ground motion. In this paper, the issue is reviewed with regard to the relationship between vertical and horizontal ground parameters, possible structural effects, analytical evidence and field observations of damage attributable to vertical vibration effects. A simple code-compatible procedure is outlined for the evaluation of vertical earthquake-induced forces on structures where necessary.
