PET demand picks up, prices rise

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producers have announced a 3 cts/lb increase, with effect from June 1, 2002. The second-qaurter increase will help producers in improving margins, which were low in the qaurter by higher prices for purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol (EG) feedstocks. According to expets, PET margins will rise in the second quarter because the 5 cts/lb increase will more than make up for cost increases of 2 cts-3 cts/lb from higher feedstock prices. Margins are expected to stay flat in the third quarter and slip in the fourth quarter, as seasonally weak PET demand drags down prices.
