Product development practices in selected Hong Kong manufacturing industries

This paper examines the product development scenarios in Hong Kong industries. It also examines the responses of the manufacturers to the increasing pressures of shortening product development time in the worldwide trend. Based on the survey conducted, the extent to which they are engaged in product development and the relative importance of product development objectives are investigated. The degree of overlapping of different functional areas is discussed to shed light on the product development cycle time. The problems encountered in product development and the response actions considered are then discussed. In addition, the analysis of the benefits brought about by these actions that would lead to the implementation of concurrent engineering for Hong Kong industries is presented.
