Reaction synthesis processing of Ni-Al intermetallic coating on spheroidal graphite cast iron substrates

A Ni-Al intermetallic coating was fabricated on a spheroidal graphite cast iron (FCD) by the reaction synthesis processing. In this study, wear property of the coating layer and the factor affected on shear stress were discussed. Wear property of the coating layers was mesured by sliding wear test. While coating layers formed with a hot press temperatures from 873K to 1033K had superior wear property to the substrate,the layer fabricated at 873K for 15min indicated the best wear resistance. This is considered to be caused by higher hardness of Ni2Al3 compound dispersed in the coating layer. Reaction layers was affirmed at the interface between the coating layer and substrate and it was identified as a Fe-Al-Si compound from quantitative EPMA analysis. Since mean shear stress is correponding to the volume fraction of the Fe-Al-Si reaction layer formed in the interface, Fe-Al-Si reaction layer can contribute to strengthening the shear strength of the interface.
