This paper reviews basic characteristics of a number of recently developed psychiatric assessment instruments in order to illustrate some current trends in the field of psychiatric assessment, including improving efficiency of the assessment techniques, refining the assessment of specific psychiatric syndromes, adjusting assessment technology to specific settings, measuring outcome of mental disorders, and employing qualitative research methods and instruments in psychiatry.
