Work-and organizational psychology is a growing area of research as well as practice. In spite of the various fields and divergent specialities included, there is sometimes justified to regard the work and organisational psychology as a united dicipline. In this article the author has tried such an approach in discussing dominant values, problems incross-scientific contexts, cultural influences on theory development, ideologies behind improvement strategies of work organization and work environment. The article is based on a lecture given to an audience of researchers, teachers, practitionners and students participating in the August-conference 1996 arranged by the Department of Psychology, Aarhus University Denmark.
