The influence of various gas inlets on gas distribution in packed columns

Because of the lower pressure drop in a packed column, the presence of gas inlets will seriously influence gas distribution in the packed bed with the result that the operating performance of the packed column will be affected. A new, precise velocity measuring system incorporating a hot wire anemometer and an on-line computer was used in an experimental set up. Meanwhile, the performance of gas distribution in a packed column of 1000 mm diameter was studied. Several factors that may affect the gas distribution in a packed column were analysed and these provided fundamental rules for the design of gas inlets in packed column practice.
