Effects of graduated utilizable crude protein at the duodenum (nXP) on feed intake and performance in dairy cows fed different kinds of roughages - 2nd communication: Grass silage and maize silage

In order to investigate the effects of different levels of nXP supply in dairy cows offered different roughages, two feeding trials (experiment C and experiment D) with 28 and 36 dairy cows, respectively, were carried out. The basic forages used in trials C and D were grass silage and maize silage. In experiment C two levels of nXP supply were given as nXP 1, control, 100 % and nXP 2,112 % of requirement, while in experiment D three levels of nXP given were nXP 1, control, 100%, nXP 2, 106% and nXP 3, 94% of requirement. Results indicated that in experiment C increasing levels of nXP increased daily feed intake and daily milk yield from 16.6 kg DM/animal and 22.3 kg/animal (control) to 17.9 kg DM/animal and 26.1 kg DM/animal in nXP 2 group. Milk fat content was significantly higher in control with 3.86 % than in nXP 2 group with 3.36 %. Whereas milk protein content was similar in control (2.99 %) and nXP 2 group (3.04 %). In experiment D, daily feed intake and milk yield in control and nXP 2 group reached 17:9 and 18.2 kg DM/animal and 22.9 and 23.0 kg/animal and were significantly higher than in nXP 3 group with 16.8 kg DM/animal and 20.1 kg/animal. Milk protein content did not differ significantly between groups but increased as the level of nXP increases with values of 3.48 %, 3.55 % and 3.39 % in control group, nXP 2 group and nXP 3 group. Relationships between the graduated nXP supply and the performance criteria were discussed.
