Generation of multiple solitons in a 1D Hertzian chain

摘要
We explored multiple soliton generation experimentally by using a long Newton's cradle. Even identical impacts by multiple balls generate solitons with different speeds, depending on the generation sequence. This difference comes from the particle-like nature of the repelling interactions of multiple solitons. We also noticed that the well-known regular motion of Newton's cradle is a result of the finite gap between the two or more solitons in the initiation phase.
