摘要
Geophagus diamantinensis, new species, is described from the Paraguacu River basin, endemic from Chapada Diamantina region, Bahia state in north-eastern Brazil. It is recognized by both a tree-based and a character-based approaches for species delimitation, using mt-DNA and morphological data, respectively. Geophagus diamantinensis is distinguished from all other species of the G. brasiliensis species group by a deep urohyal bone, characters of colour pattern and head slender. In addition, Geophagus diamantinensis can be distinguished from G. itapicuruensis by having more dorsal-fin spines and from G. obscurus by having subterminal mouth.
