The third ways of social democracy into the 21st century

At the end of the twentieth century the politics and policies of New Labour under Tony Blair and Anthony Giddens's "Third way" have triggered a new "revisionist" debate within European social democracy. However, if one looks closer to the actual policies of the various social democratic led governments (Great Britan, Netherlands, Sweden, France) one has to distinguish between different Third ways. The experience of all social democratic governments shows - albeit to a different degree - a lack of programmatic ideas and actual political commitment to use the European Union as the new strategic space for their policies. However, the EU has to be discovered by social democracy in order to compensate for the loss of national sovereignty in policy making in times of globalization.
