摘要
Background Although carries remained a major concern in the dental world for many decades, its current decline has disclosed the increasing amount of tooth wear in our community that is often neglected, even though it causes a risk of increased susceptibility to tooth decay and dentin hypersensitivity. The aim of our current study is to assess the prevalence of tooth wear in patients visiting a private dental college. Materials and Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using 88950 patient records from Saveetha Dental College between April 2020 and March 2021. Patients of all ages until 80 years were selected and grouped into various subsets based on gender, age range, type of tooth wear exhibited and the position. The data was recorded in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and was later exported to the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for Windows. (Version 20.0, SPSS, Inc., Chicago, U.S.A.) for statistical analysis. Results Through the results of our study, we can observe a statistically significant (p=0.000) male predilection for tooth wear (51.65%), mostly occurring in the posterior tooth region (42%), with abrasion being the most common type (48.95%). The age group with the highest incidence of tooth wear was (41-50) years. Conclusion Within the limits of our study, we may conclude that males are more likely to suffer from tooth wear than females. Although adults are more susceptible to tooth wear, younger age groups have also displayed a considerable incidence of non-carious tooth loss. Thus, prevention should begin as young as possible and should not be ignored until older, with more importance to the posterior teeth.
