FE/test correlation and validation of a BIW modal analysis

Numeric simulation today is a fundamental tool in the development of new components. Validity of results must be evaluated using experimental measurements. In this paper, the objective is the simulation and validation of a body in white (BIW). The experimental modal analysis was carried out with the direct measurement of nearly 300 points, and the mode shapes were estimated using the software LMS Cada-X. The finite element model used for the simulation with MSC Nastran had more than a million dof. LMS Pre-Test is used to reduce the degrees of freedom from the FE model to the test ones. There are different methods to asses the quality of the finite element model, by comparing analytical and experimental modal parameters: MAC, CoMAC, Spider graph... Based on the outcome of the correlation analysis from LMS Gateway, the analytical models can be updated such that they more accurately predict the actual test results.
