Second harmonic scattered light from a transparent glass-ceramic containing sodium niobate nanocrystals

A study of the incoherent second harmonic radiation generated in a transparent glass-ceramic which consists of sodium niobate nanocrystals embedded in a silica-niobate glass is reported. A nanosecond laser operating at 1064 nm was used, and measurements were performed for samples with nanocrystal filling fractions up to 37%. The results allow the measurements of the first hyperpolarizability per nanocrystal, beta=166x10(-30) esu. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
