A study on STTD and STD system level performance for HSDPA

WCDMA Release 5 introduces HSDPA to realize higher speed data rate together with lower round-trip times. In this paper, we demonstrate the throughput advantages of transmit diversity over flat fading channel for slow and moderate mobile speeds. The performances of single antenna transmission, STTD transmission, and STD transmission have been studied at system level with capacity as performance index. The results show that transmit diversity actually increases throughput. Moreover, STD has been found to be an advantageous technique to improve system capacity for low mobile speeds and STTD is superior to STD when the mobile speed increases to moderate.
