The continued growth in energy demand and fossil fuel use that is projected by a number of international energy agencies is incompatible with the attainment of the greenhouse reduction targets acknowledged in the Kqoto Protocol. Significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions will not be achieved without some pain. Either energy use must be curtailed, fossil fuels replaced with a less carbon intensive fuel mix, or economic growth in ROW regions restricted; if not, the greenhouse reduction targets will not be met. This Paper explores - briefly - the implications of these factors for the development of non-fossil energy sources.
