Schizophrenia is the most debilitating and costly mental disease. The study describes incidence, clinical, and social outcome for schizophrenics in the Faroe Islands. Geographically and socially, the Faroe Islands are on the fringe of Europe, and the study is a supplement to studies of Western countries versus developing countries. The results indicate an incidence similar to the Western world in general, but a more positive social outcome. However, with regard to employment the outcome is poor, illustrating alienation from the work force.
