A framework for policy-based Quality of Service (QoS) in an LMDS wireless network

摘要
This paper proposes a framework for policy-based Quality of Service (QoS) in fixed broadband wireless networks. The paper restricts itself to Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) operating at 28 GHz, although the concept is applicable to other types of fixed broadband wireless networks. The study is part of a broad-based initiative to conduct advanced research using the LMDS test-bed in Blacksburg, Virginia. The QoS system is based on policy-based network management techniques and makes use of the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). This paper explores the core issues involved in implementing a QoS system for broadband wireless networks, namely prioritized access, resource management, network management, traffic monitoring, policing and analysis of system performance. Problems faced in enabling priority-based access, such as fixed time-slot allocation, are discussed and possible solutions proposed. Resource management and a proposal to deliver varying levels of capacity to the user are discussed. Possible approaches to enforce QoS and dynamically vary QoS policies based on multiple parameters, such as bit error rate, user preferences, and utilization statistics, are described. A simple policy example is provided to illustrate the kind of policies being created and implemented. The current status of implementation is outlined with intermediate results. Finally, the implementation details of the system are outlined with a discussion of possible problems and their solutions.
