Experimental study of Coulomb crystal formation in hollow cathode discharge

摘要
The formation of macroscopic ordered structures in hollow cathode discharge in Ar plasma has been observed. A Coulomb quasicrystal is formed by alumina grains with diameter of 70 to 140 mum. A simple phenomenological model where in the intergrain spacing results from an attractive electric-field-induced dipole-dipole force balanced by a repulsive monopole Coulomb force is used to explain the observed features of the Coulomb crystal.
