Four-level atomic coherence and cw VUV lasers

摘要
We demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing the so-called 'double-dark' scheme of four-level atomic coherence to obtain strong laser gain in the ultra-violet and vacuum ultra-violet. Furthermore, we show a new technique for eliminating Doppler broadening in a large class of multi-level (greater than or equal to 4) schemes. A specific application of these ideas to cw lasing at 253 nm and 185 nm in Hg is presented. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
