摘要：

In this essay a comparative study between the namesake short stories "O espelho" [The Mirror] written by Machado de Assis (1839-1908) and Guimaraes Rosa (1908-1967) has been elaborated. Considering textual analysis, the intricated world conceptions of these authors are confronted after an invitation of Guimaraes Rosa himself. Such invitation is noticeable not only on account of his story's title choice and textual imagetic allusions to the preceding work, but also due to the use of narrative techniques orientated to build up a narrator interested in proposing an alternative point of view on two axis of Machado's short story: the fragmentation of the self and its connection with the other.
