Hypertension in postmenopausal women and cardiovascular risk

Hypertension is a condition affecting a great number of women, mainly after menopause, with an incidence over 50% up to the sixth decade of life, As in men, hypertension in women involves a great risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, especially from stroke and ischaemic heart disease. A good treatment of high blood pressure lass shown a reduction in the number of cardiovascular events, although the results on mortality have not been totally conclusive in the trials conducted up to date. This may be related with the lower number of women included in most of the studies and/or with the lower rate of events in the female population.
