Speech-language pathologist preparation for evaluation and treatment of patients with tracheoesophageal puncture

The tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP) is a popular option for voice restoration following laryngectomy. This survey assessed the clinical knowledge and level of preparedness of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) serving patients with TEP. Results indicate SLPs received minimal exposure to this population during their university training programs. Over half of the respondents did not feel prepared to treat this population, which was supported by a basic knowledge test. The respondents who reported feeling prepared had significantly more experience and achieved a higher number of correct responses on the knowledge test. Respondents indicated a need for additional coursework, more clinical exposure to persons with TEP and inservice training in this area. Considerations related to professional preparation, continuing education, and training are discussed. Referral information is presented.
