SMILEY: A Web-based remote sensed imagery data mining system

Remote sensing imagery (RSI) data will be used by potentially millions of users, provided that there exists a good way to access and manipulate that data. In this paper, we describe a novel architecture to access, distribute, and analyze the massive amount of RSI data in order to address the problems described above. This architecture utilizes the most recent Internet technology and provides a distributed multi-tier client/server architecture for accessing and analyzing RSI data. SMILEY, a WWW-based remote sensing imagery data mining system, provides a general interface to access, display, and manipulate various sets of satellite imagery data. Users, through any common browser, can use any computer platform at any location to do RSI data analyzing. The distributed server of SMILEY is scaleable so it can easily by upgraded to handle an increasing workload thus achieving a high degree of reliability.
