Reflecting on the Policy of Accelerating the Pace of Expansion in Higher Education in China

Since higher education in China has been reformed, the last ten years have seen the implementation of a new policy to increase student enrolments. Although this expansion of new student enrolments provides more opportunities for young people to receive higher education, some issues and conflicts have gradually become evident. This essay will briefly introduce the contexts of policy and the economy in China. With a focus on expanding new student enrolments in higher education, basic information relating to the Chinese education system will be presented. Then, the details of the policies will be described. The reasons for making these policies in 1999, the advantages and disadvantages of the policies will be analysed. Finally, some recommendations will be discussed.
